We broke away from our CTD operations at midnight to make a run toward shore to transfer our water samples off the ship. (According to Natural Resources Damage Assessment , or NRDA, protocol, samples must be sent to a shoreside lab within 7 days after they are taken.)
While we were in the area, National Incident Commander ADM Thad Allen and RADM Jon Bailey, NOAA’s Director ofthe Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (our Captain’s boss) and officials from NOAA’s Subsurface Monitoring Unit came out on the vessel American Diver to see our operations. They brought several members of the media along with him. They watched from the American Diver as we demonstrated how we do our CTD casts. Be sure to watch for us on TV!
We also had New Yorker reporter Raffi Khatchadourian join us onboard for the next few days. He’ll be getting a first-hand look at life – and science – at sea
